Overview

Clear Communication, Uninterrupted Live TV Experience

A key challenge was ensuring that content access restrictions, such as reaching free limits, accessing premium content, or age-restricted content, were communicated effectively without disrupting user engagement.

To achieve this, we replaced the previous disruptive overlay with a seamless inline banner. This approach integrates smoothly into our new player UI, ensuring that:
  • Users can continue discovering content and interacting with the player.
  • The zapping experience remains uninterrupted.
  • The available player space is utilized efficiently when interaction is restricted.
Collaboration

Working Together to Deliver a Consistent Experience

This project was developed in close collaboration with the core team, while also ensuring alignment across all platforms and devices. Throughout the process, I explored various design options in figma, mapped out different flows and logic variations, and shared my findings with the broader design team.

By actively exchanging ideas and iterating on solutions together, we ensured that the inline banner approach would work consistently across platforms while seamlessly integrating into the new player UI.
User Problems

Why Users Struggled with Navigation

Here are some key user problems that the inline banner solution addresses:

Interruptive Experience:

Previously, disruptive overlays interrupted the user’s content consumption and discovery by blocking the player controls and blocking their ability to engage with the content freely. Especially during content zapping this created a frustrating experience.

Limited Interaction:

When a restriction was triggered (e.g.,registration, age verification), users couldn’t continue interacting with the player, which led to poor engagement and friction in the experience. This also resulted in users not continuing with the video view, as the interruption discouraged further interaction.
The inline banner addresses these issues by not interrupting the user flow, clarifying access restrictions without blocking content discovery, and allowing users to continue interacting with the player while being informed.

goals

Optimizing Player Interaction for Growth and Accessibility

We wanted to make the Live TV and player experience on Joyn smoother and less frustrating for our users. Instead of blocking their flow with a disruptive overlay, we introduced an inline banner that keeps them engaged while still communicating content access restrictions.

Our goal was to:
  • Let users keep exploring and interacting with the player without unnecessary interruptions.
  • Make content restrictions clearer without causing frustration or confusion.
  • Keep the zapping experience seamless, so users don’t feel like they’re being stopped in their tracks.
  • Encourage upgrades or verification naturally, without forcing users out of their viewing experience.
  • Keep video views high by ensuring users stay engaged instead of abandoning the stream due to a frustrating interruption.
